Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition 2022 Big Data and City─Spatial design for well-being─

Theme Big Data and City─Spatial design for well-being─

We seek designs for architectural and urban spaces that utilize big data. This competition will evaluate the logic of using some form of data and incorporating the results of its analysis into spatial design. Concrete data is fine, or even imaginary data that one would like to use in a particular way if one had access to it. Any type of data on any scale is acceptable, but the following three conditions must be met: 1) data must be used; 2) a framework for analyzing the data must be presented; and 3) the results of the analysis must be incorporated into the design of architectural or urban spaces.

Background:
The way we perceive and create architecture and cities is undergoing a dramatic shift. We have entered an era in which advances in digital technology are measuring our activities with unprecedented granularity, while data is capturing human behavior that up until now could only be imagined in the minds of architects and urban planners. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies, the patterns behind things that were invisible to the human eye and hand are being uncovered. This is truly the golden age of big data.
On the other hand, it is not yet clear what kind of urban spaces will be created by architectural and urban big data and its analysis, and how this will be reflected in design. For example, it is now possible to analyze the flow of people by tracking cell phones and analyzing density in the city almost in real time. The granularity of the analysis pertaining to the flow of people using big data and its applications to the actual design of urban spaces, however, are two completely different things.
When we think of big data, we tend to imagine things like optimization for individuals, and improvements to infrastructure such as transportation and sewage systems. However, just as maximizing the happiness of individuals does not necessarily lead to the well-being of society as a whole, it may not be a matter of simply optimizing data. Especially for those of us who deal with urban space, how can neighborhoods, districts, and cities, where individuals with different ways of thinking come together, and not just the lifestyle that “I” lead, remain in a “positive state”? It is in our current moment that we should be asking the question: “what kind of urban space can help to co-create and enhance well-being in a society that is rich in diversity?”
